Traumatic brain injuries

Head and brain injuries are very common in people of all ages, they frequently occur in young adults after traffic accidents or activities at risk of impact, but also in elderly people who suffer falls for different reasons.

Fortunately they are almost always mild, but can be complicated by intracranial hematomas, which depending on their location and size, may require urgent surgery.

  • Epidural hematoma
It is a collection of blood between the skull and the dura mater, is often accompanied by a skull fracture and can compress the brain in a few hours. Treatment is urgent surgery (craniotomy and evacuation of the hematoma).

  • Acute subdural hematoma
It is a collection of blood between the dura mater and the brain, is associated with lower energy impacts than epidurals, and can be manged conservatively if the patient's condition allows it. In cases where the hematoma reaches a certain size, craniotomy and evacuation of the hematoma are urgently necessary.

  • Chronic subdural hematoma
It is a collection of blood located in the same subdural space, but that occurred several days or weeks before the time in which the patient seeks help, occurs because initially the amount of bleeding is minimal and over time it grows in the form of a liquid collection. This is important, because having a slow growth and a more fluid consistency, it can be evacuated with a less invasive surgery, the evacuating trepans, through which this collection is washed without the need for a craniotomy.
